Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Suspended Amid Inquiry

CMS Superintendent Hill says she doesn’t know what prompted her suspension

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Board’s recent decision to suspend Superintendent Crystal Hill has sparked widespread curiosity and questions. Hill, who is currently on paid leave, expressed her lack of awareness about the specific issues prompting this investigation or its expected duration.

Superintendent’s Response

In a statement issued on Friday, Hill emphasized her readiness to fully engage with the review process. She stated, “I am not aware of any conduct on my part that falls short of the standards I have held myself to across twenty-eight years in public education, and I am confident that a thorough and objective process will reflect that.”

Details of the Investigation

The board has initiated an investigation into “matters involving administrative and operational oversight,” to be conducted by an external firm. However, due to the nature of it being a personnel matter, CMS has been limited in sharing details.

Commitment to Her Role

Despite the uncertainty, Hill remains committed to her position. “The work we have done together over the past three and a half years, for our teachers, our staff, and most of all our students, has been the honor of my career,” she stated. Hill expressed her intent to continue serving the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools community after the review’s conclusion.

Background Tensions

Speculation regarding Hill’s job status increased following the board’s rejection of her budget proposal in April. Tensions became apparent during special budget hearings and closed session personnel meetings. Nonetheless, as recently as May, CMS stated that Hill had “no intentions of resigning”.
