Celebrate Black Storytelling at the Inaugural Athens Film Festival

Historic Morton Theatre hosts inaugural Athens African American Film Festival

Celebrating Black Culture Through Film and Music in Athens

Downtown Athens is abuzz with excitement as it prepares to host an event celebrating Black culture and storytelling. The Morton Theatre Corporation is bringing the Athens African American Film Festival to the historic Morton Theatre this Friday and Saturday, offering a platform for Black narratives in film, music, and conversation.

Kimberly Davis, the festival’s organizer, shared the vision behind the event, emphasizing its significance: “We wanted to start something really to celebrate not only Black film, but Black Athens.” Davis noted that the festival has been a long time in the making, with discussions dating back to before the pandemic.

The festival, marking its inaugural year, is set to feature a variety of engaging activities. Attendees can look forward to a vibrant showcase of music videos and live performances by local hip hop artists. In addition, the festival will screen “Daughters of the Dust,” a poignant film that explores the Gullah Geechee community of the Sea Islands in Georgia and South Carolina.

Highlighting the impact of Black culture, Davis stated, “Black storytelling, Black film, Black music, Black art, Black culture, all of it matters and all of it is important. Black people are really the standard-bearers when it comes to culture in America, and we want people to come away with that idea and celebrate that idea.”

Each day of the festival will also feature a panel discussion, further enriching the experience and fostering dialogue about the themes presented.
