In an innovative effort to break down barriers to healthcare access, the Bright Futures Wellness Center has opened its doors without requiring insurance, identification, or Social Security numbers. This initiative is spearheaded by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Orvis School of Nursing, aiming to not only expand healthcare accessibility but also to nurture future healthcare professionals.
The clinic’s mission is underscored by the words of Vania Carter-Strauss, a nurse practitioner and professor at UNR, who noted the significance of the center’s role in the community. “What we were able to do is add nursing services and health services in a space that’s already recognized by the community,” she explained. “We’re able to provide those health services that help bridge some of the care for patients who aren’t able to access basic primary services.”
Operating on grant funding, the Bright Futures Wellness Center prioritizes individuals impacted by crime, extending services to those facing bullying, discrimination, or domestic violence. Among the services offered are blood pressure checks, pregnancy tests, and rapid flu and COVID-19 screenings, with a strong focus on early detection and prevention.
Language barriers continue to pose significant challenges in Nevada’s healthcare landscape. As Carter-Strauss, herself a first-generation American, highlighted, “We have approximately six to seven percent of nurses that identify as Latino and can provide linguistically appropriate care.”

The center also serves as an educational platform for nursing students, offering real-world experience in healthcare delivery. Marlyn Arce-Gomez, a Spanish-speaking first-generation student, emphasized the impact of basic health screenings. She shared a critical moment with a patient whose elevated blood pressure could have led to severe health consequences. “They had a systolic blood pressure over 200 and were symptomatic,” Arce-Gomez recounted. “That puts them at risk for a heart attack or stroke. If they hadn’t come in, they wouldn’t have known.”
By integrating education with accessible health services, the Bright Futures Wellness Center strives to enhance healthcare equity throughout Washoe County, particularly for underserved communities.
