New Sales Tax Proposal in Athens-Clarke County Aims for Property Tax Relief
In a significant move to alleviate property taxes in Athens-Clarke County, local officials are considering implementing an additional penny to the sales tax. This potential change, which will be decided upon next Thursday, could bring about notable financial adjustments for residents and visitors alike.
The proposal comes in light of recent approval from the Georgia State Legislature, allowing municipalities to use the Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) starting in 2024. This initiative seeks to channel the revenue from the additional sales tax into reducing property taxes, a plan that will need voter endorsement this November.
District 8 Commissioner Carol Myers has expressed concerns about the broader implications of this tax. While the proposal might ease the financial burden on property owners by leveraging spending from tourists and college students, it could also affect the local population who do not own property. Myers highlighted, “Just as much as there’s education on how it effects property owners, I’d like to be clear to the public on the affect on people who are not property owners, because this penny is added to grocery bills.”
In response to these concerns, Commissioner Myers has requested additional information regarding the impact of the proposed tax on renters within the county. This inquiry is particularly pertinent given that over 30 counties in Georgia have already adopted the tax following voter referendums.
