Bed Bug Precaution Leads to Temporary Courthouse Closure
In response to a bed bug incident, the Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court will be closed today, Friday, November 14, as pest control measures are implemented. The closure affects specific areas of the courthouse while others remain operational.
Due to ongoing pest treatment, the first floor’s Courthouse side entrance and the Sheriff’s main office are not accessible. Visitors and employees are directed to use the East Washington Street entrance on the second floor instead.
It’s important to note that the closure specifically impacts the Municipal Court section, leaving all other courthouse functions uninterrupted. Both court and sheriff activities on the first floor are anticipated to resume by Monday, November 17.
Despite the temporary cessation of on-site court activities, the Municipal Court website remains operational, providing online payment options and additional resources.
The decision to initiate precautionary measures came after a visitor displayed signs of a possible bed bug encounter. Following this, Athens-Clarke County Central Services Department engaged a pest control company to conduct the necessary assessment and treatment, adhering to their established protocols.
Bed bugs, known for their parasitic behavior, are typically transported via humans from locations such as schools, hotels, and second-hand furniture. Despite their nuisance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that these insects are not carriers of diseases and generally do not pose significant health risks.
