New Leadership at UNC Asheville Faces Enrollment and Development Challenges
As UNC Asheville prepares for a new chapter in leadership with Chancellor Kimberly van Noort in 2024, the university contends with significant hurdles. The institution has experienced a substantial 25% drop in enrollment over the past five years alongside a troubling $6 million deficit from two years prior.
Among the pressing issues is a protracted disagreement with Asheville locals regarding plans to develop 45 acres of forest land on the university’s southern campus. This tract is part of the 210 acres designated as the Millennial Campus by the UNC System Board of Governors in 2021. The designation permits UNC Asheville to utilize the land for advancing research, teaching, and regional economic growth.
The southern campus not only includes the 45-acre forest but also encompasses the Sherrill Center properties and the Kimmel Arena building. This development has been met with resistance from some community members, sparking a need for dialogue.
BPR’s Jose Sandoval recently engaged Chancellor van Noort in a detailed discussion covering several topics:
- Aligning university initiatives with the broader goals of the Asheville community.
- Improving student life through strategic campus development.
- Addressing the concerns raised by advocacy groups regarding the development plans.
- Enhancing communication with local residents about the campus development.
