North Carolina RIA Approves $1.6M Grants for Rural Economic Growth

North Carolina’s January Employment Figures Released

Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has announced that the state’s Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) has sanctioned grants totaling $1,657,500 for seven local government projects. These initiatives are expected to generate 215 jobs, with 26 already announced, and stimulate approximately $41 million in additional investment from private and public sectors. The announcement underscores the state’s commitment to bolstering rural infrastructure to enhance local economies and provide equitable opportunities for residents.

The RIA, supported by the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s rural economic development team, plays a crucial role in reviewing and approving funding requests from local communities. These funds originate from specialized grant and loan programs managed by the department’s Rural Economic Development Division. The grants focus on infrastructure development, building renovation, expansion, demolition, and site improvements, as part of the state’s Building Reuse Program.

Among the approved projects, Anson County will receive $225,000 to refurbish a building for Hinson & Hale Medical Technologies, creating 59 jobs. Henderson County’s grant of $80,000 will aid in repurposing a facility for HiVIZ LED Lighting, leading to 10 new jobs. Rockingham County is set to receive $500,000 for a project with TSEA Energy, aiming to generate 36 jobs overall.

In the Existing Business Building category, Cherokee County will benefit from a $40,000 grant for a renovation project at Aegis Power Systems, projected to create 10 jobs. Gaston County has been allocated $187,500 for an expansion at DePalo Foods, expected to add 30 jobs. Robeson County’s $400,000 grant will support C&S Wholesale Grocers in creating 50 jobs. Lastly, Stanly County will receive $225,000 for Michelin North America’s expansion, anticipated to create 30 jobs.

The Building Reuse Program aims to support the renovation and expansion of existing facilities, thereby facilitating job creation in rural areas. The RIA’s 17-member board formulates policies for these programs, with members appointed by the Governor, Speaker of the House, and Senate President Pro Tem.
