Nebraska Bill Advances: Campaign Funds for Candidate Security

Bill advances to let candidates use campaign funds for security

Security Expenses for Nebraska Political Candidates Under Legislative Review

Nebraska’s political landscape could soon see a shift in how campaign finances are utilized, with a legislative proposal gaining traction that would permit candidates to allocate funds for security measures. Additionally, a separate proposal could impact unemployment benefits for those declining job interviews.

Led by Senator Eliot Bostar, the legislative effort is encapsulated in LB986, which focuses on permitting the use of campaign contributions to enhance personal security for candidates.

Addressing the pressing need for such measures, Sen. Bostar remarked, “LB986 responds to a well-documented and growing reality facing candidates and public officials at every level of government. Threats, harassment, violence and intimidation tied to public service are increasing. We’ve all seen and followed the news of recent attacks on Minnesota lawmakers, presidential candidates, as well as plots and attacks on governors and officials across the country.”

The proposed bill outlines provisions for using campaign funds to cover costs related to hiring security personnel, as well as the installation and upkeep of security systems. This includes hardware, software, and electronic equipment necessary for maintaining safety. To ensure fiscal responsibility, an amendment from the Executive Board suggests that these security-related expenses must be deemed “reasonable.”
