Montana Tribal Governments Share $100K for Tourism Development Projects

Commerce awards $100K for tribal tourism • Daily Montanan

The Montana Department of Commerce has announced a $100,000 grant allocation to two Montana tribal governments to enhance local tribal tourism assets and economies. The funds, distributed through the Tribal Tourism Grant Program, aim to develop and strengthen tourism infrastructures within these communities. This initiative addresses the common question of how government funding supports tribal tourism.

The grant recipients are:

  • Blackfeet Nation will receive $50,000 to upgrade and repair tribally owned campgrounds at various locations.
  • Fort Belknap Indian Community will also receive $50,000 for enhancements, including mobility improvements at the Milk River Indian Days arbor site.

Commerce Director Marta Bertoglio highlighted the program’s focus on “shovel-ready tourism industry tribal projects” such as niche product development and facility upgrades. These projects serve common inquiries about how tribal tourism funds are utilized.

In 2024, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes were awarded $50,000 for necessary repairs at The Bison on Flathead Lake vacation rental. Janet Camel, CSKT Planning Director, emphasized the importance of the funding, noting upgrades like a new roof and improved access to the shore.

The program operates on a reimbursement basis, requiring a 50% tribal match. Eligible projects must be shovel-ready and demonstrate a commitment to long-term investment, ensuring the program effectively addresses the question of financial sustainability in tribal tourism initiatives.
