Today’s inspiring story hails from the remote areas of Cohasset and Campbellville located in Butte County, California. As wildfires wreak havoc and necessitate frantic evacuations, a story of courage and love shines through the chaos.
A resident was forced to abandon two adult Rottweilers and their litter of pups in the mayhem, as their vehicle broke down amidst the frenzy of the evacuation. The cornered dogs and their location were brought to the attention of the rescuers.

However, the raging wildfires made it impossible to reach the stranded canines. That’s when Trevor Skaggs, a brave member of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team, stepped forward.
Taking to the skies in a BCSO helicopter, Skaggs ventured into the dangerous region. Upon landing, he then embarked on a daunting 1.5-mile run to the dogs’ location. The survival story took a positive turn when he discovered the mother Rottweiler and her puppies alive, albeit exhausted and severely dehydrated. Unfortunately, the father of the pups had not survived the ordeal.

Showing extraordinary resourcefulness, Skaggs shared his water and protein bar with the thirsty dogs, rekindling their spirits. With careful maneuvering, he managed to guide the mother and her pups back the 1.5 miles to the helicopter. From there, the heroic team was flown to safety at the Chico Airport.
Now, the rescued dogs are under the care of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group, receiving the much-needed love and care they deserve after their traumatic experience.
“Our community has had a tough few days, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share this heart-touching story,” shared Butte County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue.
