Community Workshop Explores the Future of Data Centers in Athens

As the clock strikes 4 p.m. today, First AME Athens Church will become a hub of discussion for local residents curious about the implications of data centers in their area. A workshop titled “Data Centers in My Backyard: What’s Next for Athens?” promises to shed light on this pertinent issue.

Organized by Athens Land Trust in collaboration with the Southern Sustainability Institute, this event marks the second in a series aimed at engaging the community. The first gathering took place on October 7, coinciding with the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission’s decision to reject a rezoning proposal on Old Elberton Road intended for a potential data center. The denial was supported by vocal opposition from local residents.

The Southern Sustainability Institute emphasizes the importance of this event in fostering dialogue about the delicate balance between “innovation, sustainability, and growth.” The workshop seeks to provide an opportunity for Athenians to voice their concerns and understand the potential impact of data centers on their community.
