Wildfires Challenge Western North Carolina Amid Dry, Windy Conditions
As Western North Carolina braces for heightened fire risks due to dry and windy weather, fire crews are actively battling two wildfires in Buncombe County. Local officials report that these conditions are exacerbating efforts to control the blazes.
In the rugged terrain of Milk Sick Cove, the Enka Candler Fire Department, alongside the North Carolina Forest Service, is working to contain a fire that has spread across approximately 25 acres. Currently, only 10% of this fire is under control, and crews anticipate remaining on site throughout the night to manage the situation.
Another wildfire is being addressed in Fairview, near Lower Brush Creek and Burney Mountain Road. Here, the Fairview Fire Department and Forest Service have reported that about six acres have burned, with containment efforts reaching 20%. Progress is hindered by heavy blowdown, necessitating extended on-site presence by the firefighting teams.
The Buncombe County authorities are urging the public to steer clear of these areas to ensure the safety of the firefighters and facilitate their work.
Advisory on Fire Safety
Given the prevailing high winds and dry conditions, the county fire marshal has advised residents to postpone any planned burning activities. Although a formal burn ban is not in place, officials caution that even minor fires might rapidly spread under current conditions.
Residents seeking the latest guidance on open burning can contact the county’s open burning hotline at 828-250-6767.
