Omaha Tribe Secures Vertical Cannabis Licensure for Comprehensive Industry Participation
In a significant move that underscores its autonomy, the Omaha Tribe has gained approval for vertical licensure in the cannabis industry, weeks after Nebraska issued its first medical cannabis cultivation licenses. This decision empowers the tribe to engage in the full spectrum of cannabis operations, including cultivation, production, and retail.
The tribe made waves in July with the official legalization of both medical and recreational cannabis on its lands.
Presented this Monday, the tribe’s regulatory framework appears less stringent compared to Nebraska’s state policies. Notably, it omits the state-imposed limitations on cannabis flower and the flavoring of products.
John Cartier, the tribe’s attorney general, emphasized intentional contrasts with state regulations.
“We want to stand as a direct contrast to that dysfunction and show that the will of the voters is being respected, at least on the Omaha Reservation, and we’re prepared to move forward to grant access to the folks that need help through medical cannabis,” Cartier stated.
Beyond regulatory differences, tribal representatives pointed out the potential for substantial economic growth on the reservation, situated approximately 70 miles from Omaha.
