UNR to Welcome New Swans After Zeus’ Passing at Manzanita Lake

New pair of swans coming to UNR

New Beginnings for Manzanita Lake’s Swan Tradition

Manzanita Lake, nestled within the University of Nevada Reno’s campus, has long been a picturesque setting highlighted by the presence of Zeus, a beloved white swan. Since the early 2000s, Zeus was a serene fixture on the lake, captivating the hearts of many.

While campus authorities have attributed Zeus’ demise to natural causes, News 4 revealed that John Geick faces misdemeanor charges for allegedly torturing, injuring, or abandoning the swan, thereby leading to Zeus’ death.

In a statement before the State of the University Address on October 20, UNR President Brian Sandoval acknowledged the ongoing investigation, refraining from commenting on the charges. However, he did announce some hopeful news for the campus community.

“We are excited about the fact, you know, there’s been a swan on this campus for over 100 years, and so we’re going to bring a pair of swans here and do the appropriate due diligence to make sure that they’re safe once they arrive,” Sandoval remarked.

With swans being part of the university’s heritage for more than a century, Manzanita Lake is poised to welcome new swans soon, continuing a cherished tradition.
