Wayne State University Medical School Dean Returns After Leave
After over a month of uncertainty, Dr. Wael Sakr is set to resume his role as dean of Wayne State University’s School of Medicine. The announcement was made by Dr. Bernard Costello, the senior vice president of health affairs at the university, who communicated this update via email to students and faculty.
The reason behind Sakr’s initial leave from his administrative duties was not disclosed by the university. Nevertheless, the news of his return has been met with positive feedback from the medical school community. Jennifer Moss, President of the Wayne Academic Union, noted the collective efforts of faculty and student bodies in advocating for Sakr’s reinstatement.
“There was so much collective action by the faculty of the School of Medicine as well as the union,” Moss shared with Michigan Public. “And then the student senate also issued a statement that the dean of the medical school should be restored to his position, and it worked.”
Sakr’s reinstatement comes amidst a period of change within Wayne State’s leadership. Dr. David Rosenberg, who temporarily filled the dean’s position, resigned nearly two weeks ago, citing concerns over the manner of his appointment.
Adding to the leadership shifts, Kimberly Espy, the university president who initially placed Sakr on leave, also stepped down recently. These changes prompted Moss to express hope for stability and progress within the institution.
Further efforts to ensure steady leadership are underway as Shirley Stancato, Chair of the Wayne State University Board of Governors, announced the commencement of a search for a new president. Stancato conveyed in a campus-wide email that a specialized search firm will be engaged, and input from the university community will be sought to determine the desired qualities for the next president.
