Forsyth County Commissioners Approve Conditional Debt Forgiveness Plan
In a recent decision aimed at mitigating financial pressures, Forsyth County commissioners have conditionally approved a strategy that could alleviate up to $5 million in debt for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. This decision emerged from a board vote on Thursday, targeting debt associated with school nurses and resource officers.
The debt forgiveness is contingent upon the school district’s ability to secure equivalent funds through private donations. The funds raised will be directed toward settling other outstanding obligations, including over $3 million owed to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, which has begun accruing interest.
Commissioner Dan Besse emphasized the importance of the plan, highlighting its role in safeguarding taxpayers from escalating costs. He stated, “If somebody doesn’t pay off this debt, particularly starting with the debt that is owed to the state of North Carolina, it is going to ultimately cost the taxpayers more because of the interest that is being charged monthly.”
To ensure timely action, the resolution includes a fundraising deadline set for December. The proposal was passed with a 5-2 vote, with Commissioners Richard Linville and Gloria Whisenhunt dissenting.
