A significant milestone has been reached for the South Lake Tahoe campus and its local community as a new 100-bed residence hall opens. This development is particularly notable for its affordability and the full state funding it received.
A Historic Development in Student Housing
Jeff DeFranco, the president of Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC), remarked on the significance of this achievement, stating, “This is a full circle moment. Fifty years ago, we opened in a motel on Highway 50, and now 50 years later, we have residence halls here on campus. What makes this building unique is that every bed is an affordable bed — it’s below market rate.”
This newly completed residence hall is the first of its kind for a California community college, financed entirely through state funds, thanks to the 2022–2023 state budget. With an investment of nearly $40 million, the facility offers semi-suite style units, study areas, and community lounges, all with breathtaking views of the Tahoe Basin.
Affordable Housing for Academic Focus
The primary aim of the new residence hall is to provide students with stable, cost-effective housing, enabling them to concentrate on their studies. This is particularly crucial in a region where rental prices have dramatically increased since 2020.
The arrival of students in the fall marked the beginning of this new chapter in student housing at LTCC.
