Blue Ridge Parkway Reopens 26-Mile Stretch After Hurricane Repairs

Stretch of Blue Ridge Parkway reopens, restoring access to Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell

Blue Ridge Parkway Reopens Popular Stretch After Year-Long Closure

After being closed for nearly a year due to landslides caused by Hurricane Helene, a notable section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina is once again accessible to the public. The reopening is a significant development for locals and tourists who frequent the scenic drive.

The National Park Service announced that the repairs between mileposts 375 and 380 are now complete. This restoration opens a 26-mile corridor from Asheville at milepost 382 to Ridge Junction Overlook at milepost 355.3, close to Mount Mitchell State Park.

This section encompasses the well-loved Craggy Gardens, located approximately 20 miles from Asheville. Known for its panoramic views and vibrant rhododendron blooms in the summer, the area now offers access to the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center, the Craggy Pinnacle Trail, and a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. However, the picnic area and certain trail segments remain inaccessible.

The reopening additionally provides entry to Mount Mitchell State Park and U.S. Forest Service lands nearby.

According to parkway officials, this milestone signifies the conclusion of an initial series of recovery initiatives. Over 40 additional locations still require attention, with significant damage concentrated between Linville Falls and Mount Mitchell. Future efforts will focus on road stabilization, debris removal, and repairs to overlooks and guardrails.

Important Information for Visitors

Visitors planning a trip should consult the Parkway’s road status page for the latest updates. The North Carolina Parks website offers information about Mount Mitchell, and the National Forests of North Carolina website provides trail condition details. With ongoing work in certain areas, hazards like tree debris and washed-out sections may still pose risks.
