Raleigh, N.C.—The Renew NC program has completed storm-related repairs on the first home approved for assistance under the Single-Family Housing Program (SFHP). Funded by a federal Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Renew NC aims to address long-term recovery needs in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. The state is the first affected by this hurricane to initiate a home renovation and reconstruction effort.
North Carolina has become the fastest state in over a decade to begin rebuilding homes using HUD CDBG-DR funding. More than 1,900 applications have been received by the program, which is administered by the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Revitalization (DCR). The program prioritizes low- to moderate-income families in the 29 counties most affected by the hurricane, using $807 million of federal funding. A public dashboard tracking the progress of applications is available at the RenewNC.org website.
“Rebuilding safe and sustainable housing is crucial to helping western North Carolina get back on its feet,” said Governor Josh Stein. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized, “We are committed to getting our neighbors back home as quickly and safely as we can, and Renew NC is essential to that effort.” The first applicant, Matalene Waters, expressed relief as her home repairs were completed, highlighting the emotional toll of the hurricane.
Renew NC continues to employ western North Carolinians in various roles to assist homeowners who may qualify for aid. The program will expand later this year to include Multi-Family Housing and Workforce Housing for Ownership initiatives. For more information, homeowners can visit the program’s website, contact the call center, or download the Renew NC app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
