University of Michigan’s Libo Shan Joins Elite Group of Global Scientists
Libo Shan, a distinguished professor at the University of Michigan specializing in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, has been honored as an associate member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). EMBO is renowned for promoting excellence in the life sciences by recognizing outstanding contributors in the field.
This year, EMBO has expanded its prestigious circle by welcoming 60 new members based in Europe. Additionally, nine associate members from outside Europe have been inducted, with Shan being one of just four from the United States. Notably, she is the only American honoree who is not affiliated with an institution in Massachusetts.

Expressing her gratitude, Shan stated, “I am truly honored and humbled to be elected as an EMBO associate member. As a plant molecular biologist, it is a tremendous privilege to be recognized by the EMBO community—world-leading life scientists committed to advancing research excellence.”
Earlier this year, Shan earned another accolade as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her pioneering research on plant immune responses. Her team’s work is pivotal in understanding how plants detect infections, which is crucial for developing methods to safeguard crops from diseases.
She remarked on the collective nature of scientific success, saying, “Any success in science is a collective achievement. I am grateful to my dedicated students, exceptional collaborators and supportive colleagues throughout my scientific career. This honor also reflects the strong commitment of our institution and society to fundamental plant science research, building on a rich history and providing strong support for cutting-edge research.”
EMBO membership is a lifelong accolade that acknowledges significant scientific achievements. The organization is committed to nurturing researchers at various career stages, facilitating the sharing of scientific knowledge, and creating an environment conducive to groundbreaking research.
Fiona Watt, director of EMBO, highlighted the importance of the organization’s members, stating, “A major strength of EMBO lies in the excellence and dedication of its members. Science thrives on global collaboration, and the annual election of the new EMBO members and associate members brings fresh energy and inspiration to our community. We are honored to welcome this remarkable group of scientists to the EMBO membership. Their ideas and contributions will enrich the organization and help advance the life sciences internationally.”
EMBO members contribute to the organization’s mission by guiding scientific directions and enhancing research collaborations. Through an annual election process, the membership body evolves to include diverse research areas and address emerging scientific themes.
Shan expressed her enthusiasm about joining EMBO’s collaborative initiatives: “EMBO’s emphasis on international collaboration aligns closely with my own scientific values. Engaging with researchers across Europe and the world consistently inspires fresh perspectives and propels new discoveries. I look forward to contributing actively to EMBO’s initiatives and helping shape the future of life sciences through global partnership and shared scientific vision.”
