The recent passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” by the House of Representatives marks a significant moment in U.S. legislative history, with all three Nebraska Congressional members aligning in its favor. As the bill awaits President Donald Trump’s signature, its potential impacts are being widely discussed.
Representing Nebraska’s Second District, Congressman Don Bacon, who is set to retire at the conclusion of his current term, articulated his support for the bill by emphasizing the importance of preventing tax hikes for middle-class Nebraskans. He stated, “stopping tax increases of approximately $141 a month on middle class Nebraskan families and making the tax code permanent is critical, which is why I voted yes on the bill.”
The legislation seeks to extend the tax cuts first introduced in 2017 during President Trump’s administration. It also allocates substantial funding towards immigration enforcement and defense, while initiating significant reductions in Medicaid and SNAP benefits.
First District Representative Mike Flood, who serves as the vice chairman of the Republican Main Street Caucus, expressed his support through a joint statement with Dusty Johnson, the group’s chairman. They remarked that the bill, “provides historic tax relief for working Americans, secures our border, increases economic opportunity for Main Street businesses, and refocuses SNAP and Medicaid on their core mission of serving our most vulnerable.”
Adrian Smith, representing Nebraska’s expansive 3rd District, highlighted the bill’s potential to further President Trump’s economic strategy. According to Smith, the bill, “will catalyze President Trump’s plan to energize our economy and get our country back on track.” He also noted its role in preventing tax hikes, expanding tax relief, and fortifying essential Farm Bill programs. Smith emphasized that the bill, “ensures public assistance programs remain sustainable for the neediest Americans and empowers the Trump administration to keep our communities safe.”
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen also endorsed the bill, underscoring the widespread support for Trump’s agenda among the state’s residents. He remarked, “This legislation is foundational to extending tax cuts for families, boosting our military, securing our borders, and growing agriculture.”
However, the bill’s passage has not been without controversy. Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb criticized the bill, stating that Republicans have “abandoned farmers and ranchers,” “condemned rural hospitals to closure,” and “turned their backs on American-made wind and solar energy.” Kleeb strongly asserted, “This isn’t leadership. It’s betrayal.”
Similarly, Nebraska Appleseed, a non-profit advocacy group, voiced concerns over the bill’s implications, warning that it will, “devastate our communities, stripping health care and food support away from tens of thousands of Nebraskans and their families.”
The Nebraska Hospital Association also expressed alarm over the Medicaid cuts embedded in the bill. Jeremy Nordquist, the organization’s president, cautioned that, “Nebraskans need to be aware that the day is coming when more than 70,000 citizens will lose Medicaid coverage, rural hospitals will be forced to eliminate service and some will close, and individuals and small businesses with commercial insurance will be forced to pay higher premiums to close the funding gap in our health care system.”
