Supreme Court Decision Paves the Way for Georgia’s New Legislation on Online Content
In a pivotal move, the U.S. Supreme Court has set the stage for Georgia’s forthcoming restrictions on access to explicit online content, scheduled to commence on July 1. This outcome stems from a recent 6–3 ruling that upheld a similar law in Texas, designed to curb minors’ exposure to pornography, affirming its alignment with First Amendment rights.
The Texas law mandates age verification through government identification or comparable methods before accessing explicit material. Although the Supreme Court’s decision directly pertains to Texas, it is anticipated to influence judicial perspectives on comparable regulations across over 20 states, including Georgia.
This ruling represents a setback for the Free Speech Coalition, an association representing the adult entertainment sector, which contested the Texas statute as an infringement on the free speech rights of adults.
