Michigan Seeks Public Input for New State Superintendent After Rice Steps Down

As Michigan’s state superintendent, Michael Rice, prepares to depart, the state Board of Education is calling on the public to participate in the selection of his replacement.

The decision of appointing Rice’s successor lies with the board’s eight members. According to Board President Pamela Pugh, Rice has made significant strides in advancing the objectives outlined in Michigan’s Top Ten Strategic Education Plan.

Pugh elaborated on the role of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, emphasizing the importance of defining educational goals, monitoring their progress, and advocating for their achievement. “The State Superintendent of Public Instruction helps to shape the direction [of Michigan public education] through mapping out what the goals are,” Pugh stated. “Continuously monitoring the status of those goals. Constantly adjusting the strategy for us to achieve those goals, and then being the advocate for how we reach and attain the goals.”

Pugh underscored the necessity for the new superintendent to have a child-centric approach to decision-making and to excel in communication. She expressed the desire for a candidate who is not only visionary but also capable of acting with urgency to assess and improve upon the current educational goals and accomplishments.

Feedback collected from the public survey will play a crucial role in the selection and evaluation process. As Pugh noted, the input from “educators, parents, those who are most touched by our education system” will be particularly significant.

The survey is available on the Michigan Department of Education’s website and will remain open until July 3 at noon. The board aims to appoint Rice’s successor by early October.
