Governor Stein Launches Renew NC Housing Program for Storm Recovery

Thriving North Carolina Communities are the Focus of the Largest Statewide Downtown Revitalization Conference in the U.S.

Governor Josh Stein announced the opening of applications for a new housing recovery program in western North Carolina, aimed at repairing or rebuilding homes impacted by Hurricane Helene. This initiative, known as Renew NC, is launched by the North Carolina Commerce Department’s Division of Community Revitalization. It marks the beginning of a series of recovery programs intended to assist affected residents. The program is primarily targeted at low-to-moderate income families.

The Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program focuses on addressing the long-term recovery needs of homeowners in the region, specifically prioritizing low-to-moderate income families. The program is part of a broader plan that will later include multi-family and workforce housing initiatives. Additionally, infrastructure and economic revitalization programs are planned for future release. The program is funded by a Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Of the $1.4 billion allocated to the state, $807 million is designated for the Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program.

Governor Stein encourages eligible homeowners in the affected counties to apply for the program. Application details and eligibility criteria are available on the Renew NC website. The initiative covers a range of counties, including Alexander, Buncombe, Gaston, and Mecklenburg, among others. Governor Stein emphasized the importance of applying for assistance, especially for those whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Helene.

For those seeking further information, program staff are available to assist in determining eligibility through the Renew NC website or by calling the provided helpline. More details about the administration of the programs can be accessed through the Division of Community Revitalization’s website. The application period is now open, with a focus on promptly beginning the recovery efforts for residents who were affected by the hurricane.
