Commerce Dept. Allocates $2.3M for Gonzales, LA Clean Energy Infrastructure

U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $1.3 Million for Building Renovations to Support Economic Development in Santa Fe, New Mexico

The U.S. Department of Commerce is set to award a $2.3 million grant for infrastructure improvements in Gonzales, Louisiana. The grant, announced by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, will be directed towards roadway infrastructure at the RiverPlex MegaPark, an initiative of the Ascension Parish Government.

The grant funding is intended to foster clean energy business growth within the region. With a local match of $586,857, the Economic Development Administration (EDA) investment is anticipated to create over 450 jobs and stimulate $9.5 billion in private investment, as per grantee estimates.

As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, this investment will aim to generate economic growth and create high paying jobs in the clean energy sector. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the commitment of the administration to support regional economies, build resilience, and increase economic opportunities for workers.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo underscored the EDA’s close collaboration with local communities in promoting economic growth. The investment in Ascension Parish is expected to draw in clean energy manufacturers and distributors, contributing to a robust regional economy.

Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (LA-02) recognized the federal government’s commitment to fostering clean energy growth in Louisiana through this significant grant. The infrastructure improvements at the RiverPlex MegaPark will bolster economic diversification and are expected to generate significant private investment.

The project was made possible by the regional planning efforts of the Capital Region Planning Commission (CRPC). CRPC, funded by the EDA, works towards strengthening the regional economy, supporting private capital investment, and job creation by combining public and private sectors.

Funding for the project comes from the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2023, which provided the EDA with supplemental funds for disaster relief and recovery. Areas that have received a major disaster declaration under the Robert T. Stafford Act due to natural disasters occurring in 2021 and 2022 are eligible for these funds.
