New Beginnings for a Veteran Comic Book Store Manager
After dedicating over three decades to managing the Bizarro-Wuxtry comic book store, Devlin Thompson has embarked on a new journey by launching his own comic store, Bizarro Comics. This latest venture offers comic enthusiasts a fresh space equipped with modern amenities.
“I’ve got temperature control, free parking, accessible restrooms,” Thompson shared, highlighting the improvements in his new establishment. Located on West Broad Street, Bizarro Comics welcomed its first customers last week, showcasing a selection of several hundred comic books, alongside toys and movies.
The decision to part ways with Bizarro-Wuxtry came after the building changed ownership this summer, leading to the store’s anticipated closure this fall. Despite this transition, Thompson’s new shop is already seeing a steady stream of business.
Thompson noted a positive reception from both loyal customers and new faces. “We’re getting a ton of community support which is heartening,” he remarked. “People seem to be getting the word out and getting over here.”
Currently, Bizarro Comics is open from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, as it gradually expands its inventory. Thompson is committed to recreating the cherished atmosphere familiar to his longtime patrons. He mentioned, “We’re filling in back issues. I’m essentially starting from scratch, so it’s taken a minute, but I know where to get stuff.”
