Record High in Michigan’s Free Preschool Applications for 4-Year-Olds

Michigan’s free pre-K program receives record number of applications

Surge in Applications for Michigan’s Free Preschool Program

Michigan’s Great Start Readiness Program, known for providing free preschool education to eligible 4-year-olds, is witnessing unprecedented demand. As of July, applications have surged to about 53,000 children, marking a 16% rise compared to the same period last year, according to the state’s Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential.

Recent adjustments to the program have eliminated income restrictions, making it accessible to all families. Funded by the state budget, the initiative reportedly saves families approximately $14,000 annually on childcare expenses.

The program is implemented in local public schools, public school academies, and community-based childcare centers, offering flexible options such as half-day or full-day sessions throughout the week. Additionally, some regions provide free transportation services.

JoAnne Elkin, an early literacy and early childhood expert at Macomb Intermediate School District, emphasized the impact of robust early education during a recent press event. “When children have a strong start and access to high quality early learning, they are positioned to reach their full potential throughout their educational journey,” Elkin stated.

Since the 1980s, Michigan has offered publicly-funded pre-K, but the 2024-2025 school year marks the first time it’s available to families regardless of income. Jordan Ewert from Wayne County, whose son will soon join the program, shared how it alleviates financial burdens for his family. “The free program allows me to focus on paying back my student loans,” Ewert noted, highlighting the significance of his child gaining social and academic skills while both parents work full-time.

Children who will be 4 by December 1, 2026, are eligible for enrollment, which remains open in most intermediate school districts throughout the state. Interested families can find more information at MiPreKForAll.org.
