Cassie Quach, a local with roots in Vietnam, joined the Spanish celebration. Although Vietnam was not in the tournament, her loyalty lay with Spain, reflecting her long-standing support for FC Barcelona. “Spain is just where it hits home,” Quach shared.
Alexander Mrljesebic, on the other hand, backed France. With a French wife, his allegiance was clear, even in her absence. “Today, France is my team,” Mrljesebic declared, noting that the event inspired him to visit the French Quarter, a place he might not otherwise frequent.
South End’s Soccer Scene
Meanwhile, across town at Platform Sports Bar, a similar scene unfolded as fans turned their attention to England versus Argentina. Ruth Berhana rooted for England, drawing on her Ethiopian heritage where soccer reigns supreme. “I’m from Ethiopia, and in Ethiopia, soccer is all we watch,” she explained.
Berhana was intrigued by the number of Americans invested in the tournament, recounting a lively discussion with a Mexican fan who was rooting against England. “I talked to a stranger, and I got to bond with someone I didn’t know,” she reflected, highlighting the World Cup’s unique ability to foster connections.
Brianna Gonzalez, sporting Argentina’s colors, expressed her support for Hispanic teams. “I’m Hispanic, and I’m part of the Hispanic community,” Gonzalez stated. Despite not being Argentinian, she felt a sense of solidarity and pride.
