Community Input Sought for Athens’ New Judicial Center Design
Residents of Athens are invited to participate in shaping the future of the city’s new Judicial Center. A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, from 4:00 to 7:30 P.M. at 120 W. Dougherty Street, within the Dougherty Street Government Building Auditorium.
The Athens-Clarke County Government is seeking feedback from the public regarding the design aspects of the new facility. Residents will have the opportunity to express their opinions on various design elements, including the building’s exterior and public spaces such as lobbies and entry areas.
The decision to establish the new Judicial Center at 120 W. Dougherty Street was made by the Mayor and Commission during a meeting held on June 2. This site, currently home to the Building Inspections & Permits Department, Planning Department, and certain Transportation and Public Works staff, is already owned by ACCGov.
Funding for the Judicial Center is part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax 2020 program, which was approved by voters. The new center is intended to consolidate all judicial functions under one roof.
The ambitious project is expected to cover 218,215 square feet and comes with an estimated budget of $225 million. The timeline for the project includes an 18-month planning and design phase, with construction anticipated to start by early 2028. The completion of the Judicial Center is projected for 2030.
