Amidst a backdrop of economic and athletic achievements, Greensboro Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter delivered a vision for the city’s future during the State of the City address. Her comprehensive speech highlighted recent advancements and laid out a strategic path forward.
Mayor Abuzuaiter commenced by acknowledging the support of councilmembers and spotlighted the city’s triumphs in sports tourism. Notable events include the introduction of a professional women’s basketball team, the Big 12 swimming championships at the Aqua Center, the Norwegian men’s national soccer team’s residency, and the anticipated return of the Men’s ACC Basketball Tournament in 2027.
Economically, the city has witnessed growth with Allegacy Federal Credit Union and Hoffman & Hoffman expanding their operations. Additionally, Lumentum, a leader in cloud and networking technologies, has pledged to establish a new manufacturing plant in Greensboro.
Small businesses were also a focal point of Mayor Abuzuaiter’s address. She commended the recent openings of ventures such as Let it Glow, a candle bar, and Dear Dad’s downtown, urging the community to embrace and support these new establishments.
Highlighting the current momentum, Abuzuaiter introduced Vision 36, a 10-year strategic plan centered on talent retention, geographic equity, and staff readiness. This framework, developed after extensive dialogue with community stakeholders, aims to ensure Greensboro’s initiatives bolster the city’s strength. “Does this make Greensboro stronger?” she posed, emphasizing the alignment of city actions with broader strategic goals, fostering inclusivity, and maintaining the city’s unique identity.
The address concluded with an emphasis on education, featuring discussions with leaders from Guilford College, North Carolina A&T State University, and Greensboro College, focusing on strategies for retaining local talent.
