North Carolina Residents Rally Against Proposed ICE Detention Centers

Outside a federal courthouse in uptown Charlotte, a crowd gathered to express their disapproval of plans for new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers in North Carolina. Signs with messages like “ICE Out of North Carolina” and “No ICE Detention Camps” were a common sight as attendees protested against the potential facilities in Winton, Greensboro, and Concord.

The proposed centers, if given the green light, could house as many as 1,500 individuals in each location, according to advocates. This has sparked concern among community members and activists who believe these facilities are unnecessary.

North Carolina State Rep. Julia Greenfield was present to stand with the protesters and show solidarity with immigrant communities. She remarked, “Our immigrant community and people who have been the fabric of our country for so long and helped build this country are under attack for no reason.”

This protest follows a similar demonstration held last week outside the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh. During that event, advocates called on legislators to reject any ICE detention capacity expansion within the state.

As of now, ICE has not provided a response to WFAE’s request for comment on the matter.
