North Carolina Hosts Major Soccer Events, Boosts State Economy

North Carolina’s January Employment Figures Released

North Carolina has emerged as a prominent player on the global soccer stage, bolstered by various events and partnerships linked to the state’s Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund (MEGA Fund). The U.S. Men’s National Team’s Send-Off Match in Charlotte, just before the FIFA World Cup, marked a significant milestone. Governor Josh Stein highlighted the positive economic and cultural impact of these events, emphasizing the benefits to local businesses and communities. The MEGA Fund, managed by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, aims to attract high-profile sporting events that boost economic activity and elevate the state’s national and international profile.

The “Summer of Soccer” in North Carolina features notable events such as The Soccer Tournament (TST), the U.S. Men’s National Team Send-Off Match, and the upcoming 2026 MLS All-Star Game in Charlotte. The Soccer Tournament, held in Cary, attracted nearly 58,000 fans, while the U.S. team’s match against Senegal drew a similar crowd at Bank of America Stadium. Additionally, three World Cup national teams—Germany, Norway, and Scotland—will use North Carolina as their training base camps for World Cup preparations.

Through the MEGA Fund, North Carolina continues to expand its portfolio of nationally recognized sporting and entertainment events. For 2026, the state has already allocated over $15 million to support major events and attractions, including NASCAR events and the Professional Pickleball Association National Championships. The MEGA Fund’s support extends beyond soccer, with a committed $21 million for future events still being recruited.

Soccer-related events have shown a significant economic impact on North Carolina. The Soccer Tournament generated an estimated $14.7 million in direct economic impact for the Cary and Wake County area, while youth soccer activities contributed approximately $1 million statewide. Charlotte’s soccer scene, including Charlotte FC, was responsible for a $234.2 million economic impact in 2023, illustrating the sport’s growing influence on the state’s economy.

The MEGA Fund, created by the North Carolina General Assembly, plays a vital role in attracting major sporting events, cultural attractions, and entertainment experiences, ultimately supporting jobs, strengthening local economies, and promoting North Carolina as a premier destination for visitors and investment.
