Alabama’s Early Surge Sends Nebraska to Elimination Game
In a decisive move, Alabama’s softball team took control early against Nebraska, setting up a crucial elimination match for the Huskers on Sunday.
The game turned quickly in Alabama’s favor when Marlie Giles delivered a powerful three-run home run off Nebraska’s standout pitcher, Jordy Frahm, in the opening inning. This pivotal play laid the groundwork for Alabama’s 5-1 victory in the Women’s College World Series.
Jordy Frahm, who had been instrumental in Nebraska’s 5-3 victory over Arkansas with a 10-inning performance on Thursday, found herself struggling against Alabama. She lasted only two innings, allowing a walk and a hit batter before Giles’ decisive home run. In the second inning, Frahm conceded two more hits, but managed to prevent further scoring when an Alabama runner was thrown out at home.
Relief came in the form of freshman Alexis Jensen, who took over pitching duties but allowed single runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Coach Rhonda Revelle acknowledged Frahm’s difficulties, stating, “Frahm didn’t have her best start today.” She also highlighted the team’s overall performance issues by adding, “Here’s the truth, we didn’t play our best softball today.”
Nebraska’s offense was largely stifled, with their only hit coming from a solo home run by Hannah Camenzind in the fourth inning.
The loss ended Nebraska’s impressive 27-game winning streak, a record-setting run that had included their first World Series victory since 2002. The Huskers now face a critical match against Texas in a win-or-go-home scenario set for 2 p.m. Sunday on ABC.
Despite the setback, Camenzind expressed confidence in the team’s resilience, saying, “We’re full of a lot of heart, a lot of fight, and I have no doubt that we’ll show up with that tomorrow,” during the post-game press conference.
