Historic Athens Announces Plans for Official Athens-Clarke County Juneteenth Celebration

Historic Athens Takes the Helm for Juneteenth Celebration

For the first time, Historic Athens will spearhead the Juneteenth Celebration and Festival in downtown Athens, marking a significant moment for the community. After being chosen by ACC People & Belonging, Historic Athens will now lead the annual event on June 19, a role previously held by groups like the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement and the Athens Land Trust.

The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. at Hot Corner, inviting participants to craft signs before a march from College Square to City Hall. The march will culminate in a flag-raising and liberation ceremony at 11 a.m., providing a powerful start to the day’s events.

The festival, which is free for the community, will feature a vibrant lineup including live music, dance performances, spoken word acts, food vendors, artisan booths, and activities specifically designed for children. Starting at 11:30 a.m., attendees can immerse themselves in a rich cultural experience.

In addition to entertainment, Historic Athens will offer educational opportunities with a Juneteenth Kids Guide and pop-up interpretive signage. These displays aim to shed light on African American history and protest movements in the Athens area.

The event will also serve as a platform for the final ceremonial signatures for the proposed Richardson-Davis Park. Additionally, the day will introduce nominations for the new Jubilee Award for Humanitarianism, celebrating exceptional leadership and service within the community.
