Michigan State University President Transitioning to New Role at Clemson
Kevin Guskiewicz, the President of Michigan State University (MSU), is set to leave his position to take on the role of President at Clemson University in South Carolina. This decision comes after a tenure of a little over two years at MSU, during which the institution had offered to significantly increase his salary to retain his leadership.
In a statement directed at the MSU community, Guskiewicz highlighted the progress made under his leadership. However, he pointed to internal conflicts with some Board of Trustees members as a reason for his departure, describing the environment as “unsustainable.”
“While I firmly believe we are all better when there is a diversity of viewpoints informing decisions, our ability to make meaningful progress is hampered when disagreements move from offering alternative perspectives into publicly undermining decisions and putting personal interests above the best interests of the university and our faculty, staff and students. What is perhaps most troubling is the actions of some to abuse their access to privileged and confidential information to mispresent facts, manipulate situations and selectively use and leak that information to promote personal agendas,” he stated.
MSU Board Chair Brianna Scott acknowledged Guskiewicz’s contributions, stating, “We greatly value these past two-plus years under President Guskiewicz. His leadership has set the university on a positive trajectory and one that we can continue during this transition.”
Meanwhile, officials at Clemson University praised his extensive experience and understanding of higher education, particularly noting his familiarity with Clemson’s land-grant mission. Details regarding his official start date at Clemson are still being finalized.
The MSU board is expected to release information regarding the transition plan for leadership soon.
