Landmark Illustration Museum Opens in Capital

‘Landmark’ illustration museum launches in the capital

Renowned British illustrator Quentin Blake has inaugurated a unique museum, exclusively dedicated to illustration, with a vision to inspire other artists.

Slated to open in June, the world’s largest museum exclusively for illustration is located in Clerkenwell, London. This landmark project has been 20 years in the making.

The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration is the creation of the acclaimed British illustrator Quentin Blake himself. The centre is situated within an 18th-century waterworks and comprises three galleries. These galleries will showcase a variety of exhibitions centered on the art of illustration in all its diverse forms.

Blake expressed his delight, stating, “I have long dreamt of a permanent place with ‘Illustration’ above the door, and now the amazing reality is that we have it.”

‘I have long dreamt of a permanent place with ‘Illustration’ above the door, and now the amazing reality is that we have it,’ said illustrator Quentin Blake.

Overjoyed, Blake continued, “I am proud to think the centre has my name on it – illustration is a wonderful universal and varied language. Here we shall celebrate its traditions and welcome the astonishing diversity of visual language from across the world. Hurrah!”

The inaugural exhibition highlights the work of British-Sri Lankan multidisciplinary artist Murugiah. The exhibition, titled Murugiah: Ever Feel Like…, aims to explore identity and mental health through prints, paintings and sketches imbued with his vibrant, graphic style.

In addition to its exhibition spaces, the centre will also feature a free public library, gardens, learning studios and displays that will provide insights into the history and scope of illustration. London’s oldest surviving windmill, located on-site, will host illustrator and community residencies.
