Lake Lure Reopens: A New Chapter for Western North Carolina’s Scenic Gem
Lake Lure is once again ready to welcome visitors, marking a significant milestone in its recovery from Hurricane Helene. The lake, a beloved destination in western North Carolina, has been closed for nearly 20 months due to the devastation caused by the storm.
Following Helene’s impact, Lake Lure was inundated with sand, silt, and debris, as 15 inches of rain poured into the area. This natural disaster left the lake heavily polluted, as reported by the Citizen Times.
On Friday, under the Lake Lure Gazebo, a reopening ceremony took place with local, state, and federal officials in attendance. Governor Josh Stein and Mayor Carol Pritchett were among those celebrating this momentous occasion.
Governor Stein highlighted the lake’s significance, stating, “ So many fun movies have been filmed here: Dirty Dancing, Last of the Mohicans. The mountain views are astounding,” and added that Lake Lure is “a tight-knit community and, of course, it’s this jewel of a lake.”
The reopening will occur in stages, beginning with the Washburn Marina Ramp and the Pool Creek picnic ramp, which are set to open on Saturday. However, Lake Lure Beach will remain closed until Memorial Day, when a special celebration is planned.
The recovery process has been gradual. In October 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers initiated a major clean-up effort, lowering the lake by up to 20 feet and removing approximately 1.1 million tons of sediment and debris.
Lowering the lake required the use of tainter gates, a type of radial floodgate, located 12 feet beneath the Lake Lure dam. Mayor Pritchett noted to BPR in February, “ The most that we have ever been able to lower the lake since it was built in 1926 is 12 feet by using the tainter gates.”
Despite the reopening, Mayor Pritchett emphasized that ongoing efforts are necessary to enhance the lake’s resilience against future flooding. “ We do have additional work to complete the stationary marina docks and the fuel pump, so be sure you fill up before you bring your boat here,” she advised.
