Greensboro Welcomes Its First Women’s Professional Basketball Team
In an exciting development for basketball enthusiasts in Greensboro, the city’s first women’s professional basketball team, the Greensboro Groove, is set to make its debut this weekend. The anticipation is palpable as the team prepares for its inaugural match in the freshly launched Upshot League, a platform offering new opportunities for women in professional sports.
For the past three weeks, the players have been rigorously practicing in Greensboro, building up to this pivotal moment. Coach Janice Washington reflects on the journey, noting the significance of the upcoming game. “It’s been a very long journey,” she shares. “Being able to finally have this game and seeing the gym set up for the game is even something that just, I’m humbled, I’m grateful.”
The Groove will compete against the Savannah Steel as part of the Upshot League’s opening weekend. This league, designed as an alternative to the WNBA, will feature four teams in its inaugural summer season.
Coach Washington emphasizes the importance of the team’s presence in Greensboro, especially after the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament moved locations. “Being able to have your daughters and even your sons see that there are women playing professional sports right here in your backyard,” she states. “It’s going to be awesome.”
This weekend, the Groove will have two games at the Novant Health Fieldhouse, and excitement is already mounting with Friday’s opener being sold out.
