On April 19, Fernandez-Delgado, 65, experienced a flat tire on South Flamingo Road in Cooper City, Florida. Struggling without a functioning phone, he soon began having severe chest pain and difficulty breathing, later described by his family as praying for assistance.
That assistance came unexpectedly from three teenagers: 16-year-olds Logan Royer and Cody Magrone, and 17-year-old Brody Murray, who spotted him while returning from a fishing trip.
“We saw him on the side of the road and we were like, ‘Let’s go help him,'” stated Magrone.
Upon approaching the scene, the boys noticed Fernandez-Delgado’s distress. Recognizing the seriousness, they swiftly called 911 while ensuring he wasn’t alone.
“There’s an old guy on the side of the road. We helped him change his tire and he does not feel good at all,” one of the teens reported to the dispatcher.
Footage from police body cameras captured the teens offering ongoing support until emergency personnel arrived.
Fernandez-Delgado was transported to Memorial Hospital West for treatment and later discharged to recover at home. His son, Cristian Fernandez-Delgado, remarked on the timing of their help: “God didn’t send angels with wings. He sent those boys.”
In recognition of their quick-thinking and kindness, the City of Cooper City honored Royer, Magrone, and Murray at a City Hall meeting, where they received a proclamation and received a standing ovation. Fernandez-Delgado was present to express his gratitude.
Reflecting on their actions, Royer said, “It doesn’t hurt to stop to help someone out at all. Anyone, just help them out. It can go a long way.”
