U-M’s Spring Commencement Celebrates Significant Milestone
In a vibrant display of achievement and community spirit, the University of Michigan celebrated its Spring Commencement on May 2 at the iconic Michigan Stadium. Approximately 9,000 graduates attended the event, accompanied by nearly 60,000 family members and supporters, as the university marked a significant milestone under brisk, mostly sunny skies. During the ceremony, graduates received a special tassel, symbolizing the conferment of the university’s one millionth degree this spring.

A diverse range of stoles was worn by students, showcasing the individuality and multicultural makeup of the graduating class.

Jalen Rose, the commencement speaker, was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by U-M Board Chair Mark J. Bernstein, sharing the stage with other honorary degree recipients.

As part of the proceedings, Faculty Senate Chair Derek Peterson played a ceremonial role by placing a doctoral hood on Kent Syverud.

The atmosphere was filled with joy as students captured the moment with photos and shared in the communal experience.

Provost Laurie McCauley addressed the assembly, highlighting the university’s commitment to excellence and student achievement.

Throughout the day, the essence of U-M’s tradition was captured in details such as the mortar boards decorated with the iconic block M.

The event was further enlivened by President Domenico Grasso, who emphasized the university’s dedication to public service and innovation, stating, “We want the world to look to Michigan for the common good — for discoveries, ideas, cures and actions that advance humanity. The real power of Michigan lies in being here for everyone.”
