Gov. Pillen Requests Trump Admin Disaster Aid for Nebraska Wildfires

Pillen requests nearly $10 million in federal disaster relief following historic Nebraska wildfires

Nebraska Seeks Federal Aid After Devastating Wildfires

In the wake of rampant wildfires that have scorched more than 820,000 acres of Nebraska land, Gov. Jim Pillen has called for federal assistance to aid in the recovery efforts. The governor’s request for a major disaster declaration was sent to the Trump administration, aiming to secure the necessary resources for rebuilding the affected areas.

In a recent statement, Gov. Pillen expressed gratitude for the community’s quick response to the crisis, saying, “As Nebraska faced historic wildfires, the people of our state came together to jumpstart the recovery process.” He added, “I’m submitting my request for a disaster declaration to the White House and [Federal Emergency Management Agency]. We appreciate President Trump’s attention to this matter and his long-standing support of our state when we have requested disaster recovery funding.”

As per initial assessments by federal authorities and the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, the total damages have reached an estimated $9.7 million. The potential disaster declaration would encompass Arthur, Grant, Garden, Lincoln, and Morrill counties, providing federal funds aimed at repairing critical public infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power systems.

The call for federal aid comes in the aftermath of a particularly severe wildfire season, which began with destructive fires in March. The most significant of these, the Morrill Fire, ravaged nearly 650,000 acres across Morrill, Garden, Arthur, and Keith counties.

Gov. Pillen acknowledged the extensive support from neighboring regions and emphasized the importance of federal assistance for sustainable recovery. “Since these fires, we’ve been blessed beyond measure to see the outpouring of support – and load after load of hay – cross county and state lines to support ranching families and communities in the Sandhills,” he noted. “Nebraskans are tough as nails, and we’ll get through this moment together.”
