In a touching fulfillment of a promise made years ago, a teenager from Wisconsin took his grandmother to prom, a memory that their family will cherish forever.

Avant Williams, a 17-year-old student at La Crosse Central High School, decided to attend prom with his grandmother, Svala Heller, rather than a classmate or girlfriend. Heller, who grew up in Iceland where prom traditions are rare, had always dreamt of experiencing the quintessential American prom, inspired by what she saw in films and TV shows.

“I’ve always wanted to go to a prom,” Heller shared. “Watching American TV and all that glamour that goes with it.”

Avant Williams took his grandmother’s dream to heart from a young age. “Since I was like a little kid, my grandma’s been telling me she wanted to go to prom,” Williams remarked. “It’s her dream, and today I just feel like I should make that come true.”

The night was more than just a dance for Williams and Heller. It was a complete prom experience with photos, laughter, memories, and smiles shared with friends. Williams’ best friend, Ruben Smith, joined in the fun, serving as Heller’s second escort for the evening.

“No one gets to take their best friend’s grandma to prom,” Smith humorously noted. “It’s special.”

For Williams, fulfilling a promise made in childhood was profoundly meaningful. “I’ve only been looking up to this moment since I was like 2 years old,” he stated. “I love my grandma. She’s been there for me my whole life. I’m just happy I can make her dream come true.”
