New Medicaid Requirements May Affect 145,000 Nevadans in 2026

New Medicaid Requirements Pose Challenges for Certain Groups

As the new year approaches, significant changes to Medicaid eligibility requirements are set to impact various groups, including independent workers, family caregivers, and individuals facing employment difficulties who do not qualify as disabled. These individuals will need to meet new work requirements, undergo biannual evaluations, or prove their exemption status. The changes are slated to commence in January.

Katherine Hempstead, a senior public policy advisor at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, noted that the rollout of these changes will differ across states based on their ability to automate data processes used to assess eligibility.

A recent study outlines potential impacts under scenarios with varying levels of mitigation. In an optimal scenario, 71,000 Nevada residents might be at risk of losing Medicaid coverage. However, if no mitigating actions are taken, the number could rise to 145,000 individuals.
