Omaha Among Cities Competing to Host 2027 Women’s Volleyball Championships

Omaha could host next year's Women’s Volleyball World Championships

Omaha Poised for Role in 2027 Women’s Volleyball Championships

As the 2027 Women’s World Volleyball Championships approach, Omaha is among several U.S. cities vying for a chance to host this prestigious event. With the United States and Canada collaborating on a joint bid to host, Omaha’s inclusion could bring significant economic benefits.

The Nebraska Tourism Commission is currently accepting applications for $175,000 grants, aimed at promoting the tournament. These grants, available until May 8, are funded by the Nebraska Legislature’s appropriations bill, LB1071, which was enacted on April 7. According to the bill, the grants are designated specifically for marketing related to international volleyball events in metropolitan areas.

Omaha’s interest in hosting was highlighted in a September report by Sports Business Journal, which listed it among seven cities eager to participate. Shortly after, USA Volleyball confirmed that the U.S. and Canada secured the bid, though only two American cities will host the pool play and round of 16 matches.

State senator Brad von Gillern emphasized the potential economic impact of Omaha hosting the event, stating, “What we’re investing to draw an event like this here is returned many times over, through hotel rooms and restaurants and entertainment and travel.” He also noted the lasting exposure for Nebraska, akin to the impact of hosting the Olympic Swim trials at the CHI Health Center.

Other cities in contention include Anaheim and Sacramento in California; Austin and Houston in Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Orlando, Florida. Notably, Orlando has already secured a spot as an early round host from August 20-28, 2027, as announced by the Greater Orlando Sports Commission. Anaheim, set to host the Olympic volleyball tournament in 2028, will also host the World Championship finals on September 5, 2027.

Visit Nebraska, the state’s tourism commission, clarified to Nebraska Public Media News that Omaha’s status as a host city is not yet confirmed. Should Omaha not be selected, the grant funds will remain unused. The commission noted that any entity applying for the grant must align with its purpose and adhere to the formal grant process.

The announcement of the marketing award recipients is scheduled for May 14.
