Inspiring Act of Bravery: Mississippi Students Rescue Bus Driver

In an extraordinary show of courage and quick thinking, a group of middle school students in Mississippi successfully averted a potential disaster when their bus driver lost consciousness.
The incident unfolded last Wednesday in Hancock County, where bus driver Leah Taylor experienced an asthma attack while transporting students home from school.
“I had a medical emergency, and the students stepped up,” Taylor expressed in an interview with WLOX.
Upon realizing Taylor was unconscious, five students quickly sprang into action. McKenzy Finch observed, “She kind of, sort of, like, fell over, like flopped over, and everyone started standing up.”
Surveillance footage from Hancock County School District documented the students’ remarkable efforts. As the bus veered off course, Jackson Casnave took control of the steering wheel while sixth grader Darrius Clark engaged the brakes, effectively halting the moving vehicle.
“The bus started rolling forward. It started, like, gaining speed, so when I clicked the brakes, it about threw me out the windshield,” Darrius recounted.
Meanwhile, eighth grader Kayleigh Clark called 911, and Destiny Cornelius identified Taylor’s need for her medication. “I saw her medication in her hand, and I saw her reaching for it. I knew that’s what she needed,” Destiny stated.
The students maintained their composure and kept the other passengers calm until emergency services arrived on the scene. Later, Taylor expressed her gratitude, saying, “I can’t thank these students enough for saving everybody’s life because it could have turned out so much worse.”
Hancock Middle School Principal Dr. Melissa Saucier commended the students, highlighting the positive attributes of the current generation. “Our Hancock Middle School community is so incredibly proud of them. I hope that when people hear this story, they are reminded that there is so much good in this next generation. We just have to pay attention.”
