During the Denver Summit FC’s inaugural home game at Mile High Stadium last month, the team did not secure a win. However, for Hayden, the night signified a personal triumph.
Born without most of her right arm, Hayden found a relatable figure in Carson Pickett, who competes at the elite level of women’s soccer.
“I want to be a professional soccer player when I grow up,” Hayden expressed to CBS News. “And she was able to do that. And it really fills me with hope that I’m able to as well.”
The encounter was significant for Hayden, going beyond the realm of sports.
“Role models make you feel like you can do anything, just like them,” she noted.
Hayden’s mother, Christina Stine, observed an immediate change.
“Since meeting Carson, her confidence has skyrocketed,” Christina remarked. “At school, on the soccer field, it’s through the roof.”
The significance of the meeting is amplified by Pickett’s own past struggles with her visible difference.
“I didn’t want to be known as the girl with one arm that plays soccer,” Pickett told CBS News. “I just wanted to be known for the girl that plays soccer.”
Initially, Pickett shied away from highlighting it and even concealed her arm in photographs. Yet, she gradually came to understand the potential of her journey to inspire those facing similar challenges.
“Finding out that the journey is a lot less about myself and a lot more about the hearts I can touch along the way.”
Pickett now embraces this mission wholeheartedly.
“I want to meet all the kids, all the families, all the adults,” she stated. “I want to meet everyone that I can.”
In a testament to her dedication, Pickett surprised Hayden at her soccer practice, reinforcing their bond.
The duo aims to maintain their connection, forming a friendship poised to positively influence Hayden’s life for years to come.
