As the town of Marshall continues to recover from the impacts of Hurricane Helene, Blannahassett Island stands at the center of community efforts to envision a brighter future. Despite the significant damage the island endured, residents are coming together to reimagine its potential.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s 2024 landfall in Western North Carolina, which left a trail of destruction in Marshall, residents convened at Marshall High Studios to chart a new course for Blannahassett Island. The storm caused the French Broad River to rise to a remarkable 20 feet, wreaking havoc on the island’s amenities, including its playgrounds and walking track.
Efforts are underway to relocate the island’s severely affected sewage treatment plant, as reported by the Asheville Citizen Times. The community meeting, led by the Appalachian Design Center, is just the first step in gathering local input for the island’s revival.
Chris Joyell, the director of the Appalachian Design Center, emphasized the organization’s commitment to listening to and collaborating with the community. “I ask all our designers, when they show up in the community to kind of take everything that they have in their head and set it aside and let the community describe to us the problems we’re trying to solve and the potential solutions they’ve already come up with,” Joyell explained.
The center, known for linking residents with professionals offering pro bono services, is dedicated to integrating local values into their design process. Their past work includes revitalization projects in other Helene-affected areas such as Bakersville, Hot Springs, and Swannanoa.
For longtime resident Ellen Pearson, the island holds personal significance. Having lived in Marshall for 23 years, she reminisced, “When we got married about three years ago —my husband has a ring similar to it that looks just the same — it’s the view that you get at the south end of this island.” Pearson expressed her desire for the island to regain its natural allure and to host more community events.
During the event, residents proposed various ideas for Blannahassett’s redevelopment, including a dog park, a walking and running track, and a playground for children, all aimed at restoring the island as a vibrant community hub.
