Nevada Casinos Adjust to Penny Discontinuation with New Guidelines

Nevada Gaming Control Board issues rounding guidelines for casinos

Changes in Casino Transactions as Pennies Disappear in Nevada

In the wake of Nevada’s decision to phase out pennies last November, the Nevada Gaming Control Board has introduced new guidelines for casinos on handling cash transactions. This change is set to impact how patrons receive their cash-outs, with specific instructions for rounding amounts during gaming transactions.

The board has specified that casinos have the option to round transactions to the nearest five cents or adjust the rounding either up or down as necessary. However, they are prohibited from solely rounding down.

Chan Lengsavath, who heads the Tax and License Division, emphasized, “So a lot of licensees believe their patrons would like to donate and round up essentially, or donate the rounding amount to a charity, and so we wanted to let them know that was something that can be done.”

To ensure transparency and keep patrons informed, casinos are required to display notices or include on-screen messages at kiosks about the new rounding rules.

These industry guidelines have been in effect since March 23, marking a new approach in managing cash transactions within Nevada’s gaming establishments.
