Work in progress. What to expect in the new issue of Positive News magazine

I recall growing up in a time when tuition fees were minimal, jobs seemed plentiful, and a night out didn’t equate to a month’s rent. With the rise of Britpop and Young British Artists, I transitioned from high school to the real world with optimism and a democratic mindset.

For many, leaving the comfort of school for the ‘big wide world’ is daunting, and today’s youth might find it even more intimidating.

Reports show rising disillusionment among the younger generation. Some surveys indicate an increasing preference for strong authoritarian leadership over democracy. The soaring university fees, dwindling value of degrees, lack of graduate schemes, and the threat of artificial intelligence diminishing job prospects paint a bleak picture for UK teenagers entering the job market.

The transition from childhood to adulthood can be a rough journey. Still, there are numerous initiatives that help pave the way. Some schools are focusing on practical lessons in democracy, teaching students the importance of active participation, constructive disagreement, and responsible speech. Various programmes open up opportunities for overseas volunteering, community arts initiatives, and mentoring schemes. These initiatives aim to encourage young people to engage positively with the outside world.

In this era of artificial intelligence, traditional businesses are making a comeback, with market stall retail re-emerging as a popular career choice among young entrepreneurs. Reportedly, 34% of 16 to 24-year-olds are running a ‘side hustle’, indicating a strong entrepreneurial spirit among this generation.

On the other hand, creativity stands at a crossroads. Due to funding pressures, rising living costs, and the rapid advancement of AI, arts may become an option only for the financially secure. Various schemes across Europe are offering universal basic income to support artists, acknowledging that to produce creative work, time and stability are essential.

Everyone is at a different stage of their life journey. But regardless of our position, it’s crucial that we support the younger generation and ensure their active contribution to a society that is flourishing and thriving.
