Innovative Toolkit Elevates Aquatic Species Identification with High-Quality Video
A groundbreaking toolkit is set to revolutionize the field of aquatic invasive species (AIS) identification. This new resource promises to enhance early detection and prevention methods by making species identification more precise and accessible for a broader audience.
Colin West, CEO of the initiative, highlighted the novelty of the toolkit: “Many AIS identification toolkits are PDF or text-based with low-resolution photographs. With this toolkit, we’re bringing Hollywood-level video quality to the field of aquatic invasive species identification,” he stated.
The scientific dive team utilized advanced cameras to film a New Zealand mud snail in its natural environment. The footage reveals intricate details, capturing the snail moving over what appear to be crystals, which are actually grains of sand, showcasing its antennas and horn lids emerging from its shell.
The project’s first phase features high-quality video of 11 different species, with plans to expand the library in the coming year. This initiative receives support from the Martis Fund, the Martis Camp Foundation, and the Tahoe Community Foundation.
